Kia ora. Following yesterday’s precedent, as today’s victor I have the honour of writing our blog. Which is only fair – after a miserable 18 holes Michael is not in great form. He lost 7&5.
We teed off early this morning at Whangamata GC, a nice wee track on the Coromandel Peninsula. While not nearly as spectacular as yesterday’s course – Kauri Cliffs – there were plenty dog legs, streams and ponds to keep us honest. Thankfully, however, missed fairway did not necessarily mean lost ball (although there were a couple of those). Fortunately we hooked up with a couple of Auckland’ers – Ian and Dave – who were great company. Unfortunately they beat us...convincingly (5&3) - although Ian’s 26 handicap might have had something to do with that. Bandit. At the end of the day, Whangamata GC was the winner, and all said and done it was a very enjoyable morning. We even met a couple of punters on the 3rd fairway that had heard about what we were doing, which was pretty cool.
One or two holes were pretty memorable. The 16th for me was a standout – a short “risk reward” par 4, where you can either lay up with a mid-iron short of a stream, or resort to violence and crash driver over a small forest, hopefully landing near the well guarded green. The 14th wasn’t bad too – a long par 4 with a(nother) stream 50m short of the green. (I made double bogey). But the people are what made the day, along with the weather.
Thanks to Whangamata GC for hosting us; to the friendly locals we met in the clubhouse; and to Ian and Dave from Auckland. An epic day all round. Now we’re off to play some beach cricket and spend some time with the golf widows. Peace.
Scores: Jamie 78; Michael 88 (Jamie won 7&5)
3 Putts: Jamie 0; Michael 1
Birdies: Jamie 1; Michael 1
Come to Noordwijk on the Netherlands and play with Darrin Murray and myself. If Mike is going to shoot 88 I think we could be competitive.
